Skydiving & Common Aircraft

Have you ever wanted to know how it feels to fly? Parachuting describes the process of skydiving out of an airplane and descending slightly to the earth. While it may feel like flying, skydiving is a bit different. The degree of security provided by having a parachute is the main difference. Your chute slows down your descent, not only making your freefall safer, but also supplying you with a beautiful canopy tour thousands of feet in the air!

If it's your first time you will be harnessed in with a Tandem Master! Your instructor will help you into a harness, attached to a parachute and together you and he will depart the aircraft, freefall and land. Each parachute has been professionally packed and examined. You may even have the chance to release the chute yourself before you glide safely to the ground!

So just how high will you be whenever you jump?

The plane has to hit an elevation of 10,000 to 14,000 feet before you can exit. That means, you will be diving from almost 3 miles above the ground! This elevation cap exists for your protection, any higher and you would need an oxygen mask!

You'll be taught on how each of your parachutes are handled before you leave the ground.

If your primary parachute gives you trouble, you have a second. This reserve chute is immediately activated and released should you and your tandem master hit a low elevation without the primary canopy operating. Often in specialist training, skydivers can practice and learn the release times of a parachute while being tethered to the airplane. This method of parachute training is referred to as "Static line jumping" which is much like bungee jumping, but you are high in the air as opposed to on a stationary structure.

Common Skydiving Airplanes

Skydivers usually jump from a class of plane referred to as "light sport aircraft" like the Cessna or Otter. Aside from recreational sport use, light aircraft are optimal for freight transport and aerial photography. However, the majority of these planes are made and designed exclusively for skydiving as they climb a lot faster than normal aircraft enabling divers to jump up to 4 times in one hour!

In some planes, skydivers can be at optimal height in 10 to 20 minutes. Unsurprisingly, the size of the engine determines how quickly it gets up to this point. The faster planes, like the King Airs with PT6A-20 engines, are regarded as the fastest in the world in their ascent.

These types of aircraft can hold up to 15 people, in addition to their speedy climb to optimal height. {The King Airs, however, are only the second most popular aircraft used for diving.} The most prominent double and single engine planes for skydivers are the Havilland Canada DHC-6-Twin Otter, and the Pacific Aerospace PAC P-750 XSTOL, respectively. Whether piston-powered or turbine-powered, aircraft optimized for skydivers have wide doors. Turbine and piston-powered planes are separated by a key difference: turbine planes are lighter and use their fuel more efficiently. While they supply a similar horsepower as a traditional piston engine, crafts with turbine engines are typically more expensive.
